About Us

What is a Veterinary Behaviourist?

A Veterinary Behaviourist is a fully qualified veterinarian who has chosen to specialize in the field of Behaviour Medicine. This ensures a comprehensive background in brain anatomy, neuro-physiology, medicine and pharmacology, as well as learning theory, behaviour modification and the effects of medical problems on behaviour.

This unique skillset places Veterinary Behaviourists in the perfect position to diagnose both behavioural conditions and medical conditions that can affect a pet’s behaviour.

Veterinary Behaviourists are able to address behaviour problems from a species-specific and developmental perspective with a focus on understanding your pet’s body language and communication style and are able to use appropriate, individually suited medications, pheromones and nutraceuticals to best help your pet where necessary.

Ben Van Der Merwe

Ben Van Der Merwe – Client Care & Coordination

Ben is based in South Africa, where his love for animals began at a young age. Growing up on his family farm in the land of the majestic “Big 5” nurtured his fascination with animal behaviour and shaped his commitment to supporting pets and their families.

In 2008, Ben moved to Abu Dhabi to pursue a career in aviation—a chapter that strengthened his exceptional customer service, organisational, and communication skills. These skills later became invaluable when he transitioned into the pet-care industry.

Ben joined Dr Katrin’s team in 2020, where his professionalism, empathy, and calm manner quickly stood out. After returning to South Africa in 2022, he continued to support the Behaviour Team remotely.

Today, Ben is an integral part of the Trinity Veterinary Behaviour team. Working closely with Dr Katrin, he manages the team’s diary, coordinates all client communication, and ensures every case is handled with clarity, care, and efficiency. His reliability, compassion, and dedication make him a vital connection between clients and Dr Katrin, helping Pet Professionals and families feel supported throughout their pet’s behavioural journey.
